Does Telehealth Work?

Research affirms telehealth is as effective as in-person care

  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs studied interventions delivered in person versus by videoconference, finding that the two methods are equally effective (Turgoose, D., et al., Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, Vol. 24, No. 9, 2018).
  • Systematic reviews have also found that telepsychology delivered by video and phone is effective for depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorder (Varker, T., et al., Psychological Services, Vol. 16, No. 4, 2019), as well as for substance use, eating disorders and other problems.
  • "What we've seen is that telehealth is essentially just as effective as face-to-face psychotherapy—and retention rates are higher," says David Mohr, PhD, director of the Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.
